Hello Music Lovers,

I wanted to let you know of an amazing opportunity to hear a new band called Now You See Them at Growing Young Cafe. They are fun, acoustic, indie-folk that promise to get kids(and adults) dancing. (Take a listen at http://myspace.com/nowyouseethem)

Sunday, January 25th from 2-3:30. Kids are free (and so is play area that day). Adult tickets are $5 and we can only sell 50 (says the fire marshall). So let me know if you'd like me to reserve you one, and send this on to any friends you think may be interested.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Allowance for Kids

I really think it is important for our kids to know how much things cost. Not continuing to think that money grows on trees or in a secret pocket in my purse.

I am showing them by example with my compacting and now I am taking that a step further. I am going to love this!

This week we will start to give our two oldest children an allowance. They are 10 & 14 years old.

10 % to go to savings. IE: The Disney account I have started at the bank.
10 % to go to church.
80 % for them to spend or save how they choose.

I am not longer going to buy their gum, mints, bag of Twizzler's they will die without, make-up, hair stuff, trading cards or whatever...

Yes, I will continue to buy necessities like deodorant, toothpaste and soap!!! :)

The rest is up to them. They will have to decide what's important to them and plan ahead. I will help them keep a log of their money and how it's spent.

I'll let you know how it goes!

Do you give your kids allowance? What method do you use?

Cooking with Kids ~ No Bake Bars

Cooking with kids is a new feature on Kid Friendly Asheville. Right now we are "compacting" in our home teaching our kids about wants vs needs. It's a valuable lesson for kids to be taught.

I added up how much we spend buying store bought organic granola bars and apple snack bars. They are a convenience food and add up costing way too much.

One box of 5 organic granola bars will cost you about $5.00 a box. There are usually 3-4 boxes in our cabinet at any given time. That's about $15.00 every grocery visit. Not much you say. Multiply that by 4. $60.00 a month. Multiply that by 12. $720.00 a year. OMG! Is that right? Let me do my math again. For GRANOLA BARS/APPLE BARS!!!!!!!!!! You've got to be kidding me. I spend that a year (give or take) on convenience snack bars?!?!?!?!? That's way to much. For a "compactor"or any other type person that's too much to spend.

I was sent a no bake recipe and adjusted it my way.

My helper.
No Bake Bars

Some are organic and some are not. Somethings aren't worth it and everything doesn't have to be organic. :) I was going for cheap and even bought store brand if I was able to find it.

No Bake Bars

* 2 1/2 cups crispy rice cereal
* 2 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
* 1/4 cup chopped pecans
* 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
* 1/2 cup chocolate chips
* 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
* 1/2 cup light corn syrup
* 1/2 cup peanut butter
* 1 teaspoon vanilla
* 1 tablespoon maple syrup

Directions

1.In large bowl, combine cereal, rolled oats, chopped nuts & chocolate chips; set aside.

No Bake Bars

2.In small saucepan, combine brown sugar and corn syrup.

No Bake Bars

3.Bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
4.Stir in peanut butter, maple syrup and vanilla; blend until smooth.

No Bake Bars

5.Pour over cereal mixture; mix well.
6.Press into ungreased 13"x 9" pan. I lined mine with wax paper to get it out easier. I sprinkled chocolate & peanut butter chips down first to add more taste.

No Bake Bars

No Bake Bars

7.Cool; cut into 24 bars.

No Bake Bars

No Bake Bars

As you can tell the bars were a HIT!! They are a bit crumbly so next time I will adjust the liquid part to make them more "hard".

I added up the expenses. $18.00 was spent on groceries to make the bars. I figure I can get three different batches from all of those ingredients. Lets say I get 24 bars times that by 3 then you get 72 bars for $18.00. Not bad at ALL! That's averages $216.00 for a year to make these bars!!!!! WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!!

These bars were sweet and can substitute the place of store bought cookies. They are perfect for small snacks as well! They aren't all that healthy but not everything has to be. I am going to add dried fruit to a batch. There are so many different ways to make them. Just be sure to adjust the liquid part so they don't end up dry and crumbly.

Groundhog Day at the Western North Carolina Nature Center

HOW MUCH WOOD COULD A WOODCHUCK CHUCK IF A WOODCHUCK COULD CHUCK WOOD?

Spend your Groundhog Day at the WNC Nature Center with Susan Reinhardt and find out what a single mom and a single groundhog have in common!

It’s Groundhog Day once again at the Western North Carolina Nature Center! Join Asheville Citizen Times columnist Susan Reinhardt and the Nature Center staff on Monday February 2, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. as we take a close view of our groundhog, Nibbles, one of the largest squirrels in the eastern U.S.! Our Nature Center naturalists and Carlton Burke, noted expert, will amaze you with the biology and ecology of these herbivorous creatures, along with Appalachian music and folklore about our local “whistle-pigs”.

Nibbles D. Groundhog (pre-named) was brought to the Nature Center two years ago by a local family who had brought her up by hand. In her first year of life, she became accustomed to free meals and carpet so release into the wild was out of the question. In addition, she did not have the skills to avoid predators or the sense to avoid humans. The WNC Nature Center was delighted to welcome her as one of its educational animals.

Known also as woodchucks, or Marmota monax to lovers of Latin, groundhogs were initially scarce in the eastern United States when the first European settlers arrived. However, as forests were felled and meadows and fields increased in abundance, groundhogs flourished. Almost everyone has seen one along the roadside. Now that Nibbles has arrived at the Nature Center, she can be influential in her ability to illuminate the finer features of a species often seen at distance. It is undeniably exciting to catch a glimpse of a woodchuck from a car at 60 mph or one running away from you, but the unique situation of this imprinted animal will allow many Nature Center visitors their first upclose educational experience with a groundhog.

To that educational end, here are some whistle-pig facts. Woodchucks are seasoned climbers and good swimmers but do not chuck wood. Though like beavers, for which groundhogs are sometimes confused, woodchucks need to gnaw to keep their ever-growing front teeth from getting too long. When not gnawing, they are known to nibble. Foraging mostly by morning and evening, they keep a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, grass and leaves with the seldom addition of insect or snail flesh. They can hold food with their front legs while standing upright to survey the scene. This scoping is also done at the entrance to burrows, which can be extensive and include multiple escape routes, a latrine and flood control system, all of which are cleaned several times a week. The nest can be 4.5 feet below the ground in these mostly single-occupancy dwellings. This accomplished excavation provides homes for foxes, opossums, raccoons, rabbits and mice. Groundhogs use burrows routinely including during approximately 3 months of hibernation when their body temperature drops by almost half and heart rate slows 85% to save energy. Males emerge first around the beginning of February (in time for Groundhog Day we hope) and females come out about a month later, when members of each sex come together for a short period to mate. The young provide food for foxes and hawks while adults help sustain larger predators.

So, come join us at the WNC Nature Center for your own personal Groundhog Day celebration and we will do our best to explain what a single mom and a single groundhog have in common and how much wood a woodchuck would chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood!

The Nature Center’s mission is to educate the public about the flora and fauna of Western North Carolina and foster an interest in the conservation of native plants and animals. The Nature Center serves 27 counties in western North Carolina and each year welcomes 100,000 visitors through its doors. For more information on this Groundhog Day celebration, please contact Keith Mastin, Education Curator, at 298-5600 ext. 308.

Plan a game night at your house.

Kid Friendly Asheville believes in quality family fun!

You don't always have to leave your house for Kid Friendly Family Fun.

How about starting a tradition with your children or grandchildren?? Plan a game night. Children as young as three even enjoy this family fun.

If you plan on inviting more family and friends to your family fun here are a few ideas to make your night a big success.

Set up a Kid Friendly table. At our house the Dora table works perfectly. Just the right size for small children to use for their games. Younger children can play Memory, Dominoes (with pictures), Sorry, Candyland and many more. They don't have to really follow the rules. Let them make the rules up themselves. Just let the younger kids enjoy the fun!

You can let the older kids play with the adults. They like being included in the grown up fun.

Adult (kid friendly) games to think about playing: Monopoly, Trivia Pursuit, Upwords, Scrabble, Dominoes, Clue, Scatagories, Cranium and many more. It's a good idea to pair a child with an adult and play in pairs. That way the child doesn't get overwhelmed and think they cannot play the game as good as the adults.

No matter the game, your family will enjoy it. Be prepared to laugh and make lots of great memories for your family and friends.

****If you have a family tradition to share with us just send us an email
AshevilleKids(at)aol(dot) com****

We'd love to hear about it and post it on KFA!
