The Health Adventure ~ There's Still Time to Sign Up for Summer Camp

At The Health Adventure's Discover Science Summer Camp, children don't just learn about science, they experience it! Spaces are filling up quickly, so call today to check availabilities.

Camps for 2009 include:

Young Adventurers Bubble and Fizz!
June 15-19 or June 22-26
Rising 1st and 2nd graders
Air bubbles, soap bubbles, bubbles galore. Make concoctions, shake stuff up, and send things flying. Investigate air pressure, experiment with carbon dioxide, and create some cool vibrations. This camp is a gas!

Surfin’ Safari
July 13-17 or July 20-24
Rising 3rd-6th graders
Let’s make some waves! In fact, we’ll make an entire ocean ecosystem. Would you trade places with a pufferfish in the marine food chain? Where did the names “surgeonfish” or “deep sea anglerfish” come from? Discover why the oceans are so salty. Over 70% of the Earth’s surface is water – dive in! This camp will be deep.

Alien or Not?
July 13-17 or July 20-24
Rising 3rd-6th graders
Just what is an alien anyway? A single-celled creature slowly envelops its prey as it digests it alive…is it an alien, or an amoeba? You decide! Battle the unseen living in your backyard, underneath your fingernails, and even in your nose. Join us as we use microscopes, methylene blue, mouthwash and more to uncover the mysteries of the unseen. Come decide for yourself: are there really aliens living among us?

Family Robotics Workshop
July 28th or 29th
Rising 4th graders - Adults
In this one-day workshop, kids of all ages will be working together. Discover the exciting world of robotics as you work as a family team to build and operate a robot. Design, test, and redesign your robot to accomplish tasks and meet challenges. Make your robot carry objects, navigate obstacle courses, and maneuver up steep ramps. Build, play, and explore – families and robots together!

GIRLS Quest: Girls Investigating Real Life Science
August 3-7

Learn what it’s like to be a scientist in the real world! Design and test a marshmallow catapult. Tour Mission Hospital to discover the world of microbiology. Build a robot at UNCA, see a real ultrasound at an OBGYN office, and discover the inner workings of an animal hospital. Each day will combine lab experiments at The Health Adventure with field trips to visit female scientists at work in our community. Limited to 14 girls!

The Rainbow Well in Asheville, North Carolina

Happy Spring Equinox Everyone!

It's full of fresh starts, new seeds to plant and the promise of a new day. Cardinals are chirping, daffodils blooming and camping season has officially opened up. I have also found a new favorite place to go --- Big Creek in Tennessee where it feels like heaven meets earth.

And of course here at The Rainbow Well, we've been busy. I taped a radio show, began a new book (to be released September of 2009) and accepted some speaking engagements. Life continues to creatively unfold. So please stay tuned.

Creativity Day Camps continue as well with our next special event on:

Saturday, April 11th
Time: 10 AM - 2pm
Cost: $45 per child ($65 after June 1st)
RSVP: Required (828-505-0383 or maureen@therainbowwell.com)

In addition, I has 3 weekly slots open for Art Therapy or Parent Coaching clients if anyone is interested.

And most importantly, I wish each of you and your families a fun, creative and special Spring of 2009!

Best, Maureen

The Health Adventure ~ Essay Contest Encourages Kids to Cash in on their Creativity

I got this email and think it's awesome!!!!!!!!!!

Essay Contest Encourages Kids to Cash in on their Creativity

What happens to a dollar bill during the course of a day? Does it spend hours crumpled in a pocket? Does it travel in a car, on an airplane, in a spaceship? Is it deposited in the bank or spent at a store? An essay contest running through March 27 invites students in grades 2 through 5 to cash in on their creativity by writing about a day in the life of a dollar bill.

The grand prize winner will receive a family trip to Washington, D.C., as well as a $100 Dimeasaurus savings account and a family membership to The Health Adventure. The trip includes a four-night stay at a Washington, D.C. area hotel with free admission to top attractions. A second place winner will be selected from each grade, and will receive a $100 Dimeasaurus savings account and a family membership to The Health Adventure.

The contest, presented by Star 104.3, Asheville Savings Bank, and The Health Adventure, is being held in conjunction with the museum’s current exhibit, Moneyville. The exhibit uses the fascinating subject of money to build math skills and promote economic literacy in a fun, immersive setting. Hands-on activities range from creating your own “money” to running a lemonade stand to seeing what a million dollars looks like. Throughout the exhibit, guests will discover how money is made, spent, earned, and saved, and how it connects people around the world.

A panel of judges will narrow down the entries to 12 finalists. Those finalists will be invited to Star 104.3 studios to be videotaped reading their essays. The videos will then be posted on the station web site, where the public will vote for the winning essay. Winners will be announced after April 10, 2009.

Entry forms may be picked up at any Asheville Savings Bank location. Essays may be dropped off at any Asheville Savings Bank location or The Health Adventure. Essays may also be mailed to: The Health Adventure, Attn: Essay Contest, PO Box 180, Asheville, NC 28802. Entries must be dropped off or postmarked by March 27, 2009.

For more information, visit www.thehealthadventure.org, or call (828) 254-6373.

Plan a game night at your house.

Kid Friendly Asheville believes in quality family fun!

You don't always have to leave your house for Kid Friendly Family Fun.

How about starting a tradition with your children or grandchildren?? Plan a game night. Children as young as three even enjoy this family fun.

If you plan on inviting more family and friends to your family fun here are a few ideas to make your night a big success.

Set up a Kid Friendly table. At our house the Dora table works perfectly. Just the right size for small children to use for their games. Younger children can play Memory, Dominoes (with pictures), Sorry, Candyland and many more. They don't have to really follow the rules. Let them make the rules up themselves. Just let the younger kids enjoy the fun!

You can let the older kids play with the adults. They like being included in the grown up fun.

Adult (kid friendly) games to think about playing: Monopoly, Trivia Pursuit, Upwords, Scrabble, Dominoes, Clue, Scatagories, Cranium and many more. It's a good idea to pair a child with an adult and play in pairs. That way the child doesn't get overwhelmed and think they cannot play the game as good as the adults.

No matter the game, your family will enjoy it. Be prepared to laugh and make lots of great memories for your family and friends.
