Sorry I have been MIA.

I'm trying to get over a cold I've had since January. I ended up in the ER with a Respiratory Infection.

I'm sorry if I missed a few posts and haven't answered emails.

I'm going to catch up today though.

Community Diaper Drive for Local Families a Success!

On February 10, 2010, community volunteer, Stephanie Troop of Weaverville organized a Diaper Drive for LightShare of Buncombe County. Atlanta Bread Company on Merrimon Avenue graciously hosted the event and provided complimentary muffins and coffee.

The community effort was a huge success. With a few weeks of promotion by area media and blogs, and four hours of collection, 6,000 diapers were donated to LightShare. This amount was collected from parents at three preschools (Around the Son Preschool, Regent Park Early Childhood Development Center, and North Asheville Preschool at Asbury United Methodist Church), the Munchkin Market Consignment Sale, and 55 moms, parents, and grandparents who attended the drive.

Our goal was simple: Please bring any unused disposable diapers that no longer fit your children/grandchildren or a new package of diapers from the store.

“We are floored with such a wonderful community response for the need of diapers for families in our area. Sometimes, we tend to think globally, which is great. However, we also forget that families in our community really need our help, as well. We are so grateful for all the donations.” said Cameron Kempson, Executive Director of LightShare.

This week, those diapers will be distributed to the Hominy Valley, Candler, NC community by the LightShare FamilyShare program. Thanks to this diaper drive, the diaper pantry will be overflowing. The diaper pantry is part of the FamilyShare food/diaper/clothing pantry at the Davis Chapel United Methodist Church, 26 Davis Chapel Road, Candler, 828.665.2550. The pantry will be open to the public (weather permitting) on the second Thursday of each month from 4:30-6:30 pm and the first Saturday of each month from 8:30-11:00am during the months of February through April.

If you missed the diaper drive, you can still donate diapers, formula or other canned non-perishable food to Serendipity Consignment Store on 21 Long Shoals Road in Arden. Serendipity is a corporate sponsor of LightShare and collects food and diapers year round.

Since 2006, LightShare connects generations through educational programs to build community.

LightShare is not IN the community, LightShare IS the community. LightShare teaches generations how to connect their assets and resources in order to impact the whole community. They have reached hundreds of residents in our backyard and want to expand our connections.

Plan a game night at your house.

Kid Friendly Asheville believes in quality family fun!

You don't always have to leave your house for Kid Friendly Family Fun.

How about starting a tradition with your children or grandchildren?? Plan a game night. Children as young as three even enjoy this family fun.

If you plan on inviting more family and friends to your family fun here are a few ideas to make your night a big success.

Set up a Kid Friendly table. At our house the Dora table works perfectly. Just the right size for small children to use for their games. Younger children can play Memory, Dominoes (with pictures), Sorry, Candyland and many more. They don't have to really follow the rules. Let them make the rules up themselves. Just let the younger kids enjoy the fun!

You can let the older kids play with the adults. They like being included in the grown up fun.

Adult (kid friendly) games to think about playing: Monopoly, Trivia Pursuit, Upwords, Scrabble, Dominoes, Clue, Scatagories, Cranium and many more. It's a good idea to pair a child with an adult and play in pairs. That way the child doesn't get overwhelmed and think they cannot play the game as good as the adults.

No matter the game, your family will enjoy it. Be prepared to laugh and make lots of great memories for your family and friends.

****If you have a family tradition to share with us just send us an email
AshevilleKids(at)aol(dot) com****

We'd love to hear about it and post it on KFA!

The Health Adventure ~ Free Wednesday

February 3, 2010

On the 1st Wednesday of every month from 3PM-5PM, The Health Adventure opens its doors for free!!

Community Diaper Drive for Local Families

Community Diaper Drive for Local Families

Community Volunteer, Stephanie Troop of Weaverville has organized a Diaper Drive for LightShare of Buncombe County.

On Wednesday, February 10, from 9am-1pm drop off diapers to Atlanta Bread Company on Merrimon Avenue and enjoy coffee and pastries!

Our goal is simple: Please bring any unused disposable diapers that no longer fit your child/grandchildren or a new package of diapers from the store. If your older child or grandchild is like ours, they may have mastered potty training the day you bought the big box of diapers, and you still have 3/4 of that box just sitting in the bottom of your closet! All sizes, brands, and styles are welcome. No amount is too small or too large!

Disposable diapers are very expensive and just NOT feasible for low-income families. Many underprivileged families in our community are only able to change their children's diapers one time/day (that's one: O-N-E).

Imagine how your child would behave if they wore the same diaper all day long. Then imagine how difficult your life would be as a caretaker. This has many negative effects on children in need: major health concerns, developmental issues, low self esteem, missed educational opportunities……just to name a few.

These diapers will be taken directly to the LightShare FamilyShare program in Hominy Valley, Candler, NC. FamilyShare offers parenting and preschool programs twice a year for community families. However, in 2010 a food/clothing/ diaper pantry will be open for the entire community.

Here are some surprising statistics:

-Safety Net Programs such as Food Stamps and WIC do NOT cover the cost of diapers. Diapers are classified in the same disallowed category as cigarettes and alcohol.

-An adequate supply of diapers can cost $50-$100/month per child. This can total 10-20% of the monthly income for someone making minimum wage. And that's just for 1 child. Compare this expense to you and your husband's car payments.

-The vast majority of licensed day care centers do NOT accept cloth diapers, and require parents and caregivers to provide a steady supply of disposable diapers. If low-income families do not have enough disposable diapers to participate, they can't sign up for daycare and go back to work.

-Even if parents decide to use cloth diapers, most families living in poverty do not have access to affordable laundry facilities. Furthermore, most coin-operated laundromats do NOT allow customers to wash cloth diapers for health and sanitary reasons.

PS! Not that you need any more motivation to come donate and hang out, but several awesome local businesses (Over Easy Cafe, Health Adventure and Asheville Art Museum, The Littlest Birds, Laurey's, Greenlife, Starbucks to name a few!!!!) have donated some super fun raffle prizes that you just might win!!

Since 2006, LightShare connects generations through educational programs to build community.
